Scoring Table


Note: This scoring table is no longer being used (as of April 1, 2007). We are going to be revamping the scoring system in the near future.

Program & Usability (Points)

This section is provided to show the program functionality, including: ease of use, installation, free of bugs and overall design.
  1. Application provides a demo (preview) version free of charge (1).
  2. Program has a OS standard interface (professional looking) such as: shortcuts (3).
  3. Program is free of visible programming errors: memory leaks, oversize screens (3).
  4. Application has a self-installer, either an EXE, or single file PRC/PDB file (1).
  5. Program is simple to install, upgrade and/or uninstall (1).
  6. Program screen is easy to read and is NOT cramped or has large fields/buttons (1).
  7. Program is easy to use and understand (doesn't require manual to get started) (1).
  8. Program is stand-alone (i.e. does not require a runtime or viewer) (2).
  9. Overall impression of the program operation and usability (1-5).

Documentation & Support (Points)

This section covers the documentation, on-line help and support of the application.
  1. Documentation provides: complete installation, usage notes and screenshots (5).

  3. Documentation provides: partial installation, usage notes (screenshots optional) (2).
  4. Documentation provides examples, tutorial and/or sample problems (2).
  5. Application has on-line help built into the program (3).
  6. Application provides phone (person to person) support (3).
  7. Application provides e-Mail, Fax, Web and/or Forum based support (2).
  8. Application has regular updates and/or change log information (1).
  9. Application company has a professional looking website and is easy to navigate (2).

Features (Points)

This section rates the program features, including: content, price and functions available.
  1. Application has unique features (2).
  2. Application supports high-resolution and/or color devices (1).
  3. Application has multi-language support, i.e. German, French, or Spanish (1).
  4. Program supports memory card storage (2).
  5. Application is multi-platform for example runs on Palm OS and/or Pocket PC, etc (1).
  6. Application will run on the majority of native devices and current OS versions (2).
  7. Program price is fair for features included, freeware automatically gets one (1).
  8. Program supports hardware buttons such as: Jog dial and/or button assignments (1).
  9. Overall impression of the program features and content (1-5).

PF's choice

PF's choice (PalmFLYING's choice) is an elite (around 10% of total) certification of applications (and hardware) that shows the "best of" category and must have all of the following for selection.
  1. No memory leaks (bugs): memory leaks are programming errors that result in an application not releasing memory correctly and should not be in any application (these are tested with the Palm OS® Emulator, using Palm OS 4.1 with debugging).
  2. Best of Category: these applications show the best of their type, such as best E6-B.
  3. Tested by Pilots: tested by pilots and proven to work as (or better than) advertised.
  4. Documentation: the application must provide useful and complete documentation.
  5. Support: application must provide at least e-Mail support phone and fax is desired.
  6. Optional (used to calculate #2): built-in help, O/S version compatibility (3.0 - 5.x or CE 2002 - 2003), no-runtime (excluding Microsoft .NET CF), Palm Powered Solution(s), regular (free) updates, and overall features.
