News: In-Flight Internet Is Here, Well Sorta!

But in case you have not heard starting on Tuesday, December 11, JetBlue is testing in-flight (limited) internet on one A320 plane (N651JB). The first flight will be between (JFK) and SFO.
According to The New York Times other airlines such as American Airlines, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines plan to roll out expansive Internet service sometime in 2008.
JetBlue has been working with partners Yahoo and Research In Motion (RIM) on the service. JetBlue will use 100 ground based towers that are cheaper to operate, but less powerful.
The Times reports Jetblue won’t initially charge for the service, but full-scale internet access on the other airlines is estimated to cost about $10 a flight.
