News: Has British Airways Been Flying Empty Airplanes Across The Atlantic To Keep Slots
Posted by Matthew Justice on Nov 29, 2007British Airways (BA) has been accused of flying empty wide-bodies across the Atlantic in a bid to keep its landing slots at London airports. Considering the huge amount of fuel that would be required for the flight this seems like a real waste. Each flight can produce thousands of tons of CO2, this can equate to almost 70 times the average adult's annual carbon footprint.
BA says it has flown a handful of these so-called ghost flights because it needed to reposition crew or that no crews were available to staff these flights.
The British press is outraged from an environmental standpoint. While people in the US are still arguing about whether there's any global warming at all, Europe has been looking at every aspect of business and the impact it has on the environment.
According to the article, “On November 4, BA Flight 179 crossed the Atlantic to New York completely empty. BA Flight 176 later flew back from the U.S. to Heathrow, also empty.
Two others left Heathrow at the weekend - Flights 093 to Toronto and 279 to Los Angeles - both Boeing 747s. The LA flight emitted an estimated 698 tons of CO2, 350 times more than the average car in an entire year.”
