News: FAA's New ADIZ Design Goes Live

Posted by Matthew Justice on Aug 30, 2007

ADIZ ...

The Federal Aviation Administration has reduced the size and changed the shape of the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) around Washington DC. This airspace has been in effect since the September 11th terrorist attacks.

This reduction means several small airports in Maryland are no longer included in the ADIZ which makes it easier for pilots to travel in and out of the region. Those no longer in the zone include Martin State Airport (MTN), Essex Skypark (W48), Kentmorr Airpark (3W3) and Bay Bridge Airport (W29). Eleven other General Aviation (GA) airports in Maryland are still inside the ADIZ.

There are also associated VFR speed restrictions including a 230 KIAS in the 60nm outer ring and 180 KIAS inside of the ADIZ (see NOTAM for more information).
