The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has opened an investigation into whether two go! airlines pilots may have fallen asleep during a flight from Honolulu (HNL) to Hilo last Wednesday.

Flight 1002 was headed for Hilo Airport around 10 am but overshot the airport by 15 miles before returning to land safely. According to a report from KGMB-TV Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) were tracking the plane by radar and were unable to reach the plane for 25 minutes. During this time the plane remained level at 21,000 ft before turning around and returning to the airport.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said yesterday the agency has opened an investigation. "We're investigating whether the pilot and co-pilot of a Feb. 13 go! airlines flight fell asleep while the plane was in the air between Honolulu and Hilo," Gregor said.
