News: Emirates Airlines Launches Inflight Cell Phone Service
Posted by Matthew Justice on Mar 27, 2008Emirates airlines has announced a new system and policy allowing passengers to make cell phone calls during flight. The airline has installed the AeroMobile system in an Airbus A340 that has been modified to prevent calls from interfering with aviation electronics. Calls are allowed only at cruising altitude and during the day.
According to the AeroMobile web site, “AeroMobile aircraft passengers and crew can safely use their own mobile phones and PDAs whilst in-flight to keep in touch with colleagues, customers, friends and family. AeroMobile supports voice telephone, text messaging and data services using current and future aircraft communications technologies.”
Meanwhile, the Australian airline Quantas has announced their plans to allow the use of cell phones for text messaging and e-mail, but not voice calls, during flights.
